Type Locality and Naming

Central-north Yunnan (border with southernmost Sichuan). The Xiaohekou Fm was named by Wang Kenan et al. in 1963. The naming locality is Xiaohekou, Dongchuan City, Yunnan Province. The reference section is at Xiaoheiqing-Pudu River, northwest of Dongchuan City, Yunnan Province. Middle formation-level stratigraphic unit of the Kunyang Gr in the Dongchuan area.

Synonym: (小河口组)


Lithology and Thickness

The formation is dominated by grey, grey-white quartz sandstone and quartzite accompanied with dark-grey slate. The lower part is often intercalated with ferruginous slate, hematite and limonite beds. The sandstone bears oblique bedding and ripple marks. There are often a ferruginous breccia, ferruginous sandstone and ferruginous sericite slate at the top of the formation. The thickness varies from 765 to 1800 m.

Relationships and Distribution

Lower contact

It is in conformable contact with the underlying Dayinpan Fm

Upper contact

The top is conformably overlain by the Madi Fm

Regional extent

Central-north Yunnan (border with southernmost Sichuan). It is exposed only around the Dongchuan area.

Age 

Schematic stratigraphic column indicates that the Kunyang Gr spans the Yuxian (Stenian), and this is the upper of its three formations in the Dongchuan area.
